How to Book Your Second International Consulting Gig

By January 14th, 2020Money

Traveling to countries on your bucket list. Having the travel expenses covered and getting a generous consulting fee. Bringing your family and/or significant other on the consulting trips. All of these perks (and more) make international consulting very appealing. I’ve had the privilege of doing consulting gigs at companies in 58 countries over the last five years and have experienced all of these benefits.

In my last post, I talked about the best way to book your first international consulting gig is to find and pitch multinational companies. Essentially, you look for a company in your country that has offices in other countries. When you book a gig at the main office, you then have the leverage to give the same training and/or a variety of trainings at their other offices around the world.

In that last post, I also gave examples of three specific companies you can pitch. That post was wildly popular and got a crazy amount of feedback because of the specifies. In today’s post, I want to give you a few more examples of specific multinational companies that would be could targets to pitch.

Remember, consulting at companies is more than just doing a training. You should have several options in your pitch proposals. Companies paid outside consultants $39 billion dollars last year. You can do one-off trainings from $10K-$100K, license any online courses you have at a rate of $1K-$3K per employee, book high-end coaching in the range of $15K-$60K, and sell comprehensive training programs and temples at rates of $15K-multiple six-figures. I base these numbers off of what companies have told me they’ve paid consultants in each of these areas this year.

Here are some examples of multinational companies you can pitch:

If you are a Health & Fitness Consultant. “Atento” based out of Madrid, Spain is a good company to target. They have 154,000 employees, they do about $1.8 billion dollars a year in revenue, and they have offices in 13 countries. They are a support/sales center type of company, which means their employees aren’t physically active. Health & fitness is important for them to handle all of those hours sitting. They don’t have a wellness program setup for their employees, which makes a HUGE opportunity for you to pitch.

You can pitch health & fitness consulting as a series of trainings or offer to set up a wellness program for their entire company. If you go the whole company route, you better charge at least $100K. The person you would pitch at the company is Iñaki Cebollero. His title is the “Chief People Officer,” which means he’s the H.R. director. You can see on their website that they’re a company that cares about their employees and the community. Wellness for their employees would be appealing to such a company. Start by pitching their main office in Madrid and negotiate to consult on wellness at their other offices.

If you are a Digital Marketing/Podcast/Social Media/Website Consultant. “Hilti” based out of Schaan, Liechtenstein is a good company to target. The have 24,000 employees, they do about $4.6 billion dollars a year in revenue, and they have offices in 120 countries. They sell production and building materials, which means they started their business with a strong offline presence. Selling online is something they do but could definitely use help with.

They have no company blog, no company podcast, they have a small (in most platforms, only their Facebook is large, but it’s not engaged) and non-engaged social media presence (they need a lot of help), they don’t offer digital information products, their website needs a lot of work to be optimized (hard to navigate), they’re not building an email list, and there are a ton of other areas that you can consult on. The person you would pitch at the company is Matthew Jackson—the director of sales and marketing. Start by pitching their main office in Schaan and negotiate to consult at their other offices.

If you are a Personal Development Consultant. “NetApp” based out of Sunnyvale, California is a good company to target. They have 10,000 employees, they do about $5.5 billion dollars a year in revenue, and they have offices in 45 countries. They are a storage and data management company and they don’t have any official personal development programs set up.

With that many employees, you can consult on leadership, communication, mindset, entrepreneurial mindset, productive, stress management, and a bunch of other personal development topics. The person you would pitch at the company is Gwen McDonald—she is the director of human resources. Start by pitching their main office in California and negotiate to consult at their other offices all over the world.

These are just a FEW examples of midsize multinational companies that you can target to pitch and book your first (or more) international consulting gig. There are SO many more opportunities. I hope it gives you a little clarity and a place to start. Here’s to you and getting booked this year!

Do you want to book an international consulting gig?

If you’ve followed my journey over the last five years, you’ve seen me go from doing local $500-$2K consulting gigs to traveling to 32 countries a year to consult for some of the largest companies in the world. You’ve seen me travel to 59 countries for consulting gigs over that time period.

If we’ve just connected, you’ve seen how consulting at companies has transformed my lifestyle business this year as I’ve crisscrossed the globe for some amazing opportunities and experiences. I’m currently in Asia on a five-country consulting tour. Before Asia, I did consulting gigs in the U.S. and a six-country European consulting tour.

Companies all over the world would hire you to consult their employees on a wide variety of topics. You can charge fees in the range of $10K to $100K range per two to four-hour training. You can get all of your travel expenses covered and get companies to pay for the expenses of your family and/or a significant other. You can book high-end coaching with company executives in the range of $10K-$60K, license your online courses at a rate of $1K-$3K per employee, and sell comprehensive training programs and templates in the range of $15K to multiple six-figures.

I base these numbers off of what the companies that I’ve consulted for this year have told me they’ve paid for all of these services on a wide range of topics. Companies pay based on value–not time.
